A weekend Wedding In The Country I Old Mac Daddy, Elgin Valley I Casper and Carin Part Two

…continued from Part One, the previous post.

Casper joined the guests on the deck as The Dixie Swingers began to play the Wedding March, which is a completely different tune when played by mustachioed men on a tuba, banjo and trumpet. Seriously cool. The scene, set to the dixie style soundtrack, was quite amazing: the guests sitting by the water, the sunlight streaming through the trees, and Carin & her dad coming down the path through the fynbos. We're absolutely certain it was even better than they imaged it would be.

After the ceremony and with the last bit of the sunset remaining the wedding party was treated to a very special cocktail on the balcony of the barn.  We had to write Casper for a description of the legendary "Jack & Gin" because there was so much to it we honestly couldn't even remember.  Well, they went one better and gave us the recipe!  Here it is, from the horses mouth :

The Jack & Gin

-    3 parts Hendricks Gin
-     3 parts Vanilla infused Jack Daniels
(the day before, add a split vanilla pod into the bottle of JD.
It imparts a delicious vanilla hint)
-     2 parts iced Chai tea
-     1 part simple syrup
(400ml water to 800g plain white sugar)
-     a generous squeeze of lime
-     a good sprinkling of cinnamon
Mix these all together, then add to teapot with dry ice just before serving. Serve in teacups. Each teacup should have a slice of cucumber, a cinnamon stick (or piece of) and 2-3 blocks of ice.

And finally, enjoy!

Casper told us they came up with the drink while trying to figure out how to make a cocktail that they had enjoyed at their engagement party held at a speak-easy in London called Night Jar. Apparently, it wasn’t quite working out so they decided to mix with what they had in the house. "Jack Daniels and Gin seemed like a strange combination so we went with that. The name was also pretty funny because after that, it was all downhill."

We don't know about you but we've never seen a cocktail served from a smoking teapot, especially one as boozy and delicious as this? Try it and let us know how you get on.

The Jack & Gin effectively signalled the launch (it was literally like what we imagine rocket fuel must taste like in heaven, sweet & kickin') of the party and seeing how there weren't really any other formalities, such as speeches or even a sit down meal, the guests were free to hang out, enjoy the vast stock of wine, and sample the many food creations (partly dreamt up by the couple) that came out of the Old Mac Daddy's restaurant, Brinny Breezes. The chef Jay, who also happens to be our landlord funnily enough and a legend of a guy, was quite happy to spoil the guest with mini-burgers and mini-fish & chips served in Lucky Star pilchard cans, amongst other exciting creations. The food just kept coming. Honestly. As did the wine.  The culinary event of the evening however was "make your own pizza's".  One massive table, pre-rolled bases and more than enough quality ingredients to make the pizza of your dreams.

Late that evening, or in the wee hours, it's a hard to remember, the guest were again treated to something very special - "streamline moonshine".  Small groups of guests were secretly handed a ticket at various stages after midnight, directed to one of the airstream trailers and instructed to slip the ticket under the door. When the door opened they were invited in for a bootleggers style whisky tasting experience. Again, we had to check with Casper and Carin but a serious list of fine whiskies from all over the world were available for tasting including :

Blanton’s Straight from the Barrel Bourbon Whiskey
Yamazaki 12 Yrs Old Single Malt Japanese Whisky
Strathisla 12 Yrs Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Glenlivet Nadurra 16 Yrs Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Lagavulin Aged 16 Yrs Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey

The wedding really did feel like a big party, almost like the ones we remember having as kids with our family and close friends on New Years Eve. Free from the formalities of a normal wedding the guests really enjoyed themselves. A lot. The volume never dipped. The pace never slowed. Not everyone needs to have a wedding like this, but at the same time it's wonderful to see that people can be serious about what they want from a wedding, stick to it despite best advice and pull it off.  We hope this wedding inspires other couples to be brave and go for it. It really is worth it.

As you might expect there was no DJ. Just a well thought out playlist on iTunes that could potentially take them through the night and into the early hours of the morning.
All they had to do was hit shuffle.

One of favourite weddings by a long way. No doubt. Thank you Casper and Carin for spoiling us like guests and for the chance to be there, camera and cocktail in hand, until the wee hours of the morning.

love,
welovepictures
